Joeys 1999 Matches

Australian Under 17 matches for 1999

Written by Thomas Esamie and Nick Guoth

Australia engaged in it's usual Oceanic adventure with one significant difference. This time New Zealand had already qualified by hosting the 1999 U17 World Cup, so Australia, providing it won through Oceania, would have to play off against Asian opposition as well to get across the Tasman Sea.

After all that Australia, not unsurprisingly, progressed to the Semi-final of the Oceania qualifiers. In this game one of the New Caledonians was sent off after his second yellow card offence early in the second half. Fiji is, to my mind at least, the team most likely to stop this Australia-New Zealand domination of Oceania. The first up game for Australia should prove this to be more than just fancy talk and while I like Australia winning it gets a bit tedious when the biggest point of interest is not which team scores the most goals but which Australian scores the most goals. This final shows Fiji still have a little way to go....

Having got through the Oceania bit Australia were to face Bahrain....and eventually did. The original dates of the match, May 22 and June 4, was delayed by Bahrain who contacted FIFA claiming they were unable to field a team. Ludicrously FIFA simply accepted this and allowed the re-scheduling of the games to the inconvenience of Australia who had prepared for the original dates at some cost. The final sting was that this was brought up only days before match was due to be played.

This is the first appearance in a final for Australia in a World Cup (of any age group). The only other significant finals appearance for Australia in a FIFA event was the 1997 Inter-Continental Cup in Saudi Arabia. In that game Australia played Brazil and lost 6-0....at least this one went down to the line. Eventually it was settled at 8-7 on penalties to the Brazilians.
