This marked the year the Australian womens team would go to a World Cup. The bulk of the matches before that little campaign were warm up games but since the information I have is limited this will have to make do.

This was the final warm up game prior to the World Cup which more or less was the time the team were named the Matildas. Also by now the team knew they had drawn Denmark, China and the USA in their group. This warm up against the host country was a fair indicator of what was going to happen. This was a Friendly match.

Now that Australia got stuffed 5-0 is a matter of record. However there seems to be some disagreement as to who got sent off. The World Cup records suggest Michelle Watson, but the Australian records (and witnesses at the match) say Sonia Gegenhuber got the boot. I'm hoping the Australians know their players better than the World Cup officials. The other group match ended 3-3. This was a World Cup match.
