The Matildas conceded a late goal to Japan to finish with a 1-1 draw in match two of the four-nation International Tournament in France overnight in Angouleme.
Australia were the better side in the opening half of an overall lacklustre encounter, but allowed an industrious Japan to unsettle them in the second half.
The Matildas took the lead in the 31st minute through a freekick, Joanne Peters providing Kelly Golebiowski the opportunity to volley first time from 20 metres in fantastic fashion.
Australia was unable to add to their tally from a number of chances, the best being a one-on-one between substitute Natalie Thomas and the Japanese goalkeeper in the second half.
The spirited Japanese were rewarded for their efforts with a minute remaining to snatch a share of the points. A freekick from wide on the right found Kasajima unmarked in the box, and she made no mistake with the volley from close range.
National Coach Adrian Santrac summed up Australia's performance by saying, "The players worked hard to get a result, but let it slip in the last few minutes. There is plenty of room for improvement, but we are heading in the right direction."
In the later match, Canada defeated hosts France 2-0 to claim first position on the points ladder. Despite having a player sent off in the second half, Canada managed to hang on to their lead produced by goals from Kara Lang and Andrea Neil within the first thirty minutes.
The Matildas wrap up the tournament on Tuesday night against France. Australia must win their game plus rely on Canada to drop points against Japan if they are to claim first place.
