The Qantas Matildas won their penultimate match before the Olympics with a 2-0 victory over the US Adult Soccer Association Select side today (Aust time) in Milwaukee.
The Australians were in control of play for the majority of the game, played as a finale to the US Soccer Festival where the nation's four regions compete against each other.
The Qantas Matildas' two goals were scored within a period of seven minutes towards the end of the first half, Danielle Small and Joanne Peters finding the back of the net.
Although enjoying much of the possession, Australia did not really threaten on goal until after the half-hour mark, before springing into action. Striker Sarah Walsh broke down the right flank, but her shot flew wide. Two minutes later, in the 34th minute, the Qantas Matildas took the lead, again finding the opening on the right wing, before Gill Foster held up the ball, came inside and released a neat chip over the American defence to Small. With only the keeper to beat, Small lobbed her shot in from just inside the 18-yard box.
USASA almost levelled shortly after, but Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri was equal to the task to tip over the bar a fantastic long-range strike from Annie Hawkins.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 41st minute with a crisply executed chance. Heather Garriock quickly played a corner kick short to Sally Shipard whose looping pinpoint cross eluded the defence to be converted at close range by Peters, on the run.
Australia held the upper hand for the duration of the second half with some solid passages of play, but without any clear cut chances on goal.
National Coach Adrian Santrac is pleased with the way the Australians' game is progressing for the new-look team.
"It was important to get a solid performance today, and we got just that," said Santrac. "Many of the components of our game we've been talking about and working on are beginning to come together. While the result was pleasing, the big test of this tour comes on Wednesday."
The Qantas Matildas' much anticipated last match before the Olympics is against twice FIFA Women's World Cup champions and former Olympic gold medallists USA in Blaine, Minnesota on Thursday Australian time. The USA who ranked two in the world, will meet Australia again at the Olympics in the last Group G match
