Marconi v Spirit

Round 7 report by Tony Calder
Marconi-Fairfield v Northern Spirit

Well, I though a much improved performance on Saturday, and we deserved a draw.

The two Griffiths lads both had good games and Sobczyk also put in 100%, as he has in every match he's played so far - it seems Arnie's decision to give the younger guys a go has paid off.

We still have major problems up front though, with a combination of poor service and poor finishing to blame. David Seal again missed a couple of good chances, although one of his efforts was foiled by an outstanding save from Turnbull. Why is it that every opposition keeper seems to have a blinder against us? Even Bolton, who is generally considered one of the dodgiest keepers around performed exceptionally against us.

I thought our defence was much improved, and Bingley was our best player in his return to a central role in the defence, but it was a soft goal to give away. The defection from Enes was unfortunate, but I thought JP came, then hesitated, allowing Babic to get to the ball first. This seemed to affect JP's confidence for the next 20 mins or so, but after that he seemed to put it out of his mind, and was quite dominant around the box.

Was Enes subbed at half-time because of injury? If so, what is the extent of the injury?

Nice to see the Marconi fans start a few chants (even if they were stolen from us :)), and hopefully they'll be able to convince some more of the crowd to join in.

I though the behaviour of some Marconi players though, in coming over and making abusive gestures to us at the end of the game, even before going to applaud their own fans, was totally unacceptable. Copping a bit from the opposition fans is part and parcel of the game, so I thought the Marconi players who did applaud us (including Darren McDonald, who cops more than anyone from us) was a nice touch, and something their colleagues could learn from.

All-in-all, whilst I'm not happy with the result, we showed a marked improvement, and bring in the Kingz.
