Wolves v Breakers

Round 20 report by Chris Dunkerley
Wollongong City v Newcastle Breakers

With Wolves sitting 2nd on the table and being rarely beaten these days at Brandon Park it was with hope of perhaps a point but needing three that the Breakers, weakened by the suspension of leading scorer Andy Harper, came south. Attacking from the whistle the Breakers were stunned when against the run of play lethal Scott Chipperfield drew Bobby Catlin out and getting past him plugged the shot after 8 mins.

The Breakers continued to attack but gradually Wollongong crept out of their clutches and in turn dominated for the rest of the half - and always looked likely to grab another on the break whilst Newcastle's moves broke down in the last 20m. Coming out firing the Breakers grabbed control of the game and had the Wolves on the back foot.

Inspired substitutions increased the dominence and with little Johnny scoring at 68mins, after slipping his marker and fooling the keeper, it seemed that we would have to defend a whirlwind attack. Despite forcing the Wolves never again got on top and indeed Newcastle could have scores 2 more from Smith and JB but it was the long hard strike of sub Greg Owens which rebouded off the right upright and off Pogliacomi into the net.

A fine win with a terrific 2nd half performance. Who says this is a defensive team!? Bollocks!
