Glory v Kingz

Round 17 report by Tom Niedrich
Perth Glory v Football Kingz

The Kingz long trip to Perth has up until now always ended up in defeat for the visitors. The expectations for the home team, especially after last weeks 6-1 victory over Brisbane, were such that only another goal feast would suffice.

The scene was set with the Kingz starting line-up decimated by injury, missing Michael Utting, Mark Burton, Craig Wylie, Alex Midstian and Paul Harries. Add to that the fact that the Kiwis would be playing at what would be midnight their time, and their prospects were grim.

Glory was not without their own injury worries however, with last weeks star performers Damien Mori and Wayne Srhoj both out with injuries. Although the team would be buoyed by the occasion of Bobby Despotovski's 200th NSL game in Glory colours.

Thus the first chance of the match fell to Bobby after only 2 minutes, a pass from Mrdja out of midfield finds him running down the right. Bobby right in front of goal attempts to chip the keeper but puts it wide.

At the other end it was Tallan Martin after around 12 minutes who managed to slip by the defence on the left only to put the ball in the side netting.

The Kingz had another opportunity from a corner at the 23rd minute mark when a nice in swinging kick found the head of Ngata, which he proceeded to head over the upright.

It was Glory though who drew first blood after 29 minutes. Hassell had made a competent shot at goal which was deflected to a corner. The corner was taken by Despotovski who sails the ball into the penalty area and straight into the path of Murphy, who heads home for 1-0.

The Kingz then nearly manage an equalizer at the 40th, when a defensive deflection finds Campbell, whose cracking shot from 30 metres rattles the cross bar.

Despite Glory's lead, the first half ends with the match finely balanced, with neither team dominating and with scoring chances few and far between.

Glory emerges from the changerooms looking fired up and begins to step up the pace.

Pondeljak creates a great chance for Mrdja only one minute into the second half when he sends a rebound across, but one which Mrdja can only direct at the goal on the turn with his right foot, so the ball is saved.

Bobby gets another opportunity to celebrate his 200th when a nicely weighted cross by Miller floats into position for a header from only 5 metres on the right, Bobby rises well but sends it wide.

56 minutes have gone by and Glory is dominating the midfield through the pace of Pondeljak, who, on this occasion receives a cross from Despotovski long upfield on the right. He takes the ball all the way to the byline and then cuts it back across goal where Gary Faria is waiting to put the ball in the back of the net from 10 metres out. 2-0.

Pondeljak again features only minutes later as he feeds the ball to Mrdja in the box, who this time makes no mistake and buries the ball for Glory's 3rd.

Glory continues to pressure with North impressing at the back with some great clearing runs while substitute Caceres adds another dimension of pace up the front.

It was one of those runs at the defence by Caceras that saw the rebounding ball fall to Mrdja who lays it off to Despotovski and with a nice one-two back to Mrdja, Mrdja slots the ball away for number 4.

To their credit and despite the late hour and the warmth of the Perth evening, the Kingz kept up the fight to the end, but were unable to break down a solid Glory defence.

The match ends 4-0 to Perth Glory, who has now scored 10 goals in their last two matches, while the Kingz have slumped to their 7th successive defeat.
