Wollongong City Brett Hughes, Alvin Ceccoli, Gary van Egmond, Matthew Horsley, Sonny Sevin, Michael Reda (Jason Connelly 45), Tony Perinich, Neil Harlock, Nick Joseski (Lujpco Naumovski 56), Richard Lloyd, Anthony Surjan Goal : Harlock 57 |
1 | - | 1 | South Melbourne Michael Petkovic, Nick Orlic (sent off 24), Alex Kuzmanovic, Jason Polak (David Clarkson 70), Steve Panopoulos, Vaughan Coveny, Paul Trimboli, Warren Spink (Con Anthopoulos 25), Steve Iosifidis, Ivan Kelic (Daniel Allsopp 81), Fausto De Amicis Goal : Trimboli 16 |
Orlic was sent off for a professional foul on Tony Perinich and none of the South Melbourne players rushed to shake the referee's hand for the decision. Well they rushed...that's about it though. Souths were in front at that stage but when a penalty was awarded just on halftime for a handball by South Melbourne inside the area Michael Reda did less than well by missing entirely. I'm sure his halftime replacement was purely coincidental. At the end of the day Trimboli's head and Harlock's foot cancelled one another out though with the numerical advantage Wollongong should have done better.
Played (8/11/1996) Breakers Stadium Referee : D Crawford, Crowd : 3107
Newcastle Breakers Liam Baker, Shane Pryce, Glen Sprod, Robert Ironside, Scott Thomas, Clayton Zane (David Lowe 66), Troy Halpin, Todd McManus, Jason Bennett (Harry James 75), Matt Austin, Craig Sharpley Goals : Halpin 33, Sprod 46 |
2 | - | 2 | Canberra Cosmos Tony Giannasca, Paul Dee, Richard Watson, Paul Wade, Norman Kelly, Lindsay Wilson, Peter Buljan, James Baxter, Steve Lazzari (Alan Reis 69), John Koch, Peter Mazis Goals : Buljan 18, Koch 68 |
Having drawn Newcastle 1-1 in the Round 19 game which was brought forward just 7 days earlier Canberra sprung another come-from-behind draw result on the Breakers. The Breakers had the balance of play in this one and were it not for some diabolical finishing would have scored 7.
Played (9/11/1996) Falcons Park Referee : M Shield, Crowd : 2480
Gippsland Falcons Jim Kourtis, Doug Marcina, Claudio Canosa, Marcus Stergiopoulos, Nick Palamaras, Eddie Krncevic, Alex Duric (Mark Foy 63), Clayton Bell, Billy Wright, William Hastie (Manny Gotis 83), Joe Tricarico (Carlo Villani 56) Goals : Palamaras 89 |
1 | - | 2 | West Adelaide Michael Harkness, Hamilton Thorp, Jamie Perin, Robert Slager, Robert Hooker, Richie Alagich, Alex Castro, Pablo Cardozo (Andrew Borghetto 77), Branko Milosevic, Nathan Day, Jim Tsekinis Goals : Tsekinis 28, 59 |
Tsekinis scored from a poor clearance from a corner in the first half and stole the ball from Palamaras and ran on to score in the second. Nick did the best to atone for his defensive blunder by pulling a goal back late in the game. Not much else to say except that Frank Arok should be using his magic wand any time now.
Played (9/11/1996) Suncorp Stadium Referee : E Lennie, Crowd : 5075
Brisbane Strikers Clint Bolton, Glen Gwynne, Alan Hunter, Gary Phillips, Frank Farina (Vedran Becirbegovic 60), Sean Cranney, Troy Cranney, Rod Brown (Wayne Knipe 74), Mark Battistin, Andrew Brayshaw (sent off 77), Kasey Wehrman Goals : Farina 28, Knipe 86 |
2 | - | 1 | Melbourne Knights Vilson Knezevic, David Cervinski, Andrew Marth (sent off 59), Joe Simunic, Lubomir Lapsansky, John Markovski, Ice Kutlesovski (Zoran Markovski 60), Damian Vojtek (Arthur Tsitsakis 23), Tom Pondeljak (Mijo Trupkovic 85), Ivan Duzel (sent off 63), Ransford Banini Goal : Pondeljak 40 |
It was an ugly game. Frank's fine headed goal and Wayne Knipe's late winner were just reward but Marths 'challenge' on Farina resulted not only in Marth's send off but also x-rays for FF to check if he had sustained a broken jaw. The protestations which followed were a sad reminder of the lack of sportsmanship these days and were worse when Ivan Duzel was sent off for a second yellow card offence when, in attempting to hurdle a prone Gary Phillips, Duzel 'accidentally' kicked him in the back. At best it was clumsy but clearly the referee felt some evening of odds was appropriate when he sent off Andrew Brayshaw for supposedly headbutting Zoran Markovski. In between all that young Tommy Pondeljak put the ball through Boltons legs from a tight angle to give the Knights a spot on the scoresheet.

What is it about coaches and their sons? I mean first we had Jamie Perin when John Perin was at Adelaide City and now Branko Culina has about 312 kids all of whom seem to be nudging for selection. One of them seems to have made it. I mean sure they might actually be good players but it looks very suspicious...reminds me of that Simpsons episode in which Nelson gets picked by the soccer coach to go on a trip to which Nelson replies 'Thanks Dad'. Oh and yes, this game puts Sydney United on top of the table ahead of Brisbane on goals scored.

Collingwood Warriors Frank Juric, Tom Karapatsos (Brian MacNicol 78), George Jolevski, Dean Fak, John Waddell, Con Boutsianis, Carlo Talladira, Enrico Cerrachio, Ernie Tapai, Andrew Vlahos, Kimon Taliadoros |
0 | - | 0 | Perth Glory Tom Maras, Craig Naven, Gavin Wilkinson, Vinko Buljubasic, Gareth Naven, Scott Miller, Paul McVittie, Paul Strudwick, Slobodan Despotovski, Doug Ithier, Dale Wingell |
Lots of wind and despite being the winner on points the Perth Glory failed to take advantage of Collingwoods apparent lack of depth and subsequent loss in morale.

Adelaide City Jason Petkovic, Bradley Armour, Mark Yates (Travis Dodd 70), Milan Ivanovic, Alex Tobin, Angelo Costanzo, Bradley Hassell, Dino Mennillo, John Gibson, Michael Musitano (Joe Barbaro 58), Michael Brooks (Mark Brazzale 45) |

Adelaide City are still looking for their first goal of the 96/97 season and despite their excellent defence generally they were caught napping when Andrew Harper got a free header from a corner kick by Brad Maloney to decide the match.
