Played (14/12/1996) Bruce Stadium
Referee : G Leverton, Crowd : 1000
Canberra Cosmos
Danny Milosevic, Paul Dee, David Milin, Richard Watson, Michael Garcia, Norman Kelly, Marko Perinovic (sent off 41), Peter Buljan (Tony Lemezina 55), John Koch, George Sorras, Ante Juric
Goal : Kelly 30pk
1 - 4 Brisbane Strikers
Graham Ross, Glen Gwynne, Alan Hunter, Gary Phillips, Frank Farina (Wayne Knipe 70), Rod Brown (Mark Battistin 75), Danny Wright, Troy Cranney, Andrew Brayshaw, Kasey Wehrmann (Chay Hews 79), Reece Tollenaere
Goals : Hunter 4pk, 49pk, Farina 60, Brown 65
Penalties for a push on Farina by Juric, a handball by Andrew Brayshaw and a mistimed tackle on Farina, which the latter ensured was noticed by the referee, accounted for the first 3 goals of the game. Brisbane showed they could score without the help of the referee when Farina turned in a cross from Reece Tollenaere and Rod Brown walked the ball into the net when the keeper rushed out to meet Wehrmann who squared the ball to Brown. Marko Perinovic was sent off in the first half when he charged into Glenn Gwynne in a fairly ruthless tackle.

Played (14/12/1996) Marconi Stadium
Referee : J Markovski, Crowd : 4111
Marconi-Fairfield
Bob Catlin, Robert Stanton, Paul Souris, Matthew Bingley, Brendan Renaud (Luke Casserly 24), Craig Foster (Andrew Ravanello 71), Bradley Maloney, Vlado Zoric, Sean Babic, Andrew Harper, Francis Awaritefe (Aaron Holst 85)
Goals : Brad Maloney 20, Vlado Zoric 59
2 - 1 Newcastle Breakers
Liam Baker, Matt Austin, Todd McManus, Shane Pryce, Glen Sprod, Glen Moore (Andy Roberts 45), Scott Thomas, Robert Ironside, Mark Wilson (Jason Bennett 63), Clayton Zane, Troy Halpin
Goal : Halpin 69
Craig Foster and Brad Maloney combined for the opening goal and a *flying* Casserly crossed for Zoric to widen the gap. Marconi then hung back and were punished once for this tactic with Halpin running onto a pass and slotting home a goal. Clayton Zane might have done better if he had not imitated Andrew Harper and hit the post and fail to salvage a point for Newcastle.

Perth Glory
Vincent Matassa, Craig Naven, Vinko Buljubasic, Gareth Naven, Scott Miller, Paul McVittie, Paul Strudwick, Slobodan Despotovski, Doug Ithier, Vasili Kalogeracos (Peter Vukmirovic 83), Dale Wingell (Vladimir Beretovac 74)

Goal : Naumovski 29
Perth Glory, hmm sounds pretty apt to me. The opening goal took just seconds and Perth never looked back even though Naumovski did pull back to within a goal with a goal from a very tight angle. Despotovski scored two very similar goal, picking out the far corner of the net twice to narrow David Zdrilic's lead in the goalscoring charts.

Played (15/12/1996) Victoria Park
Referee : M Shield, Crowd : 3655
Collingwood Warriors
Frank Juric, Dean Fak, Leigh Tsoumerakas, Enrico Cerrachio (sent off 28), Carlo Talladira, Andrew Vlahos (Con Boutsianis 72), Kimon Taliadoros, Ernie Tapai, Mark Silic, Brian MacNicol, Alan Scott
Goal : Taliadoros 41
1 - 3 Adelaide City
Jason Petkovic, Bradley Armour, Mark Yates, Milan Ivanovic, Alex Tobin, Angelo Costanzo (Michael Pirone 89), Dino Mennillo, John Gibson, Michael Musitano (Kosta Salapasidis 63), Michael Brooks (Joe Barbaro 77), Mark Brazzale
Goal : Mennillo 33, 90, Brooks 42
A hot day at Victoria Park didn't dampen the action and former Zebras player Carlo Talladira featured strongly in Collingwoods opening flourish. Yet it was Adelaide City who scored first after defender Cerrachio blatantly elbowed Dino Mennillo and the remaining 10 men of Collingwood wilted in the heat. Taliadoros curled a ball from the corner of the penalty area beyond Petkovic into the far post to score an impressive equaliser only to undo his efforts soon after with a dreadful backpass which left Collingwood keeper Juric stranded. Dino Mennillo slammed home another long range shot to end any argument.

Played (14/12/1996) Falcons Park
Referee : G Connolly, Crowd : 2579
Gippsland Falcons
Jim Kourtis, Marcus Stergiopoulos, Steve Mangos, Nick Palamaras, Mark Foy (Hugo Giminez 87), Alex Duric, Esala Masi, Clayton Bell, Manny Gotis (Billy Wright 87), William Hastie, Levent Osman (Manoa Masi 87)
Goal : E Masi 57
1 - 2 Sydney United
Zeljko Kalac, Robert Trajkovski (Damir Cvetko 65), Velimir Kupresak, Mark Babic, Robert Enes, Kresimir Marusic, Ante Moric (Robert Markovac 77), Ante Milicic, David Zdrilic, Paul Bilokapic, Mark Rudan
Goals : Enes 28, Milicic 84
Given United had just nailed 7 goals against Collingwood the Falcons would have been well pleased not to suffer the same fate but infact they may rue missing the chances they had and getting no points where they might have had at least 1. The first goal came from a mistake in the defence after a Marusic cross was poorly dealt with and Enes was allowed to zigzag through the defence and roll the ball past the keeper for the opener. Esala Masi missed a fairly presentable chance before falling to his right and volleying a Duric cross whilst virtually horizontal through Kalac's legs for a deserved equaliser. Milicic got the winner late as he ran onto a through ball and slipped it under the keepers body.

Played (15/12/1996) Belmore Oval
Referee : B Hugo, Crowd : 4834
UTS Olympic
Tony Franken, Ralph Bove (John Angelovski 76), Adam Ciantar, Nick Meredith, Milan Blagojevic, Alistair Edwards, Brett Emerton, Peter Tsekenis, Carlos Gonzales (Walter Ardone 76), Norman Tome, Kris Trajanovski
Goal : Ciantar 60
1 - 0 Melbourne Knights
Joe Didulica, David Cervinski, Zoran Markovski, Joe Simunic, Tom Pondeljak, Andrew Marth, Josip Biskic (Ante Deak 76), Ante Kovacevic (Arthur Tsirtsakis 76), Ransford Banini, Ice Kutlesovski, Mijo Trupkovic (Damian Vojtek 80)
For all the attacking skill on display on both sides it was disappointing (not to mention surprising) to only see one goal the entire game. In the event even that was lucky as Walter Ardone kept the ball in play thanks to a lucky bounce from the corner flag and won a corner off Ransford Banini. Joe Didulica comes out for the cross to the far post, misses it and Tome's corner is headed home by Ciantar. The game livened up a bit after that, but nothing happened.

Played (15/12/1996) Hindmarsh Stadium
Referee : W Dade, Crowd : 3972
West Adelaide
Nathan Wildy, Hamilton Thorp, Robert Slager, Robert Hooker, Richard Alagich (John Cutillo 80), Ross Aloisi, Pablo Cardozo, Con Kokkinoplitis, Frank Tibaldi, Corey Artone (Rechat Mezensof 71), Jim Tsekinis
0 - 2 South Melbourne
Michael Petkovic, Nick Orlic, Alex Kuzmanovic, Con Blatsis, Steve Panopoulos, Vaughan Coveny (Warren Spink 78), Paul Trimboli, Bill Damianos (Jason Polak 84), David Clarkson, Ivan Kelic (Michael Curcija 88), Fausto DeAmicis
Goals : Orlic 20, Kelic 76
West Adelaide seem to have problems winning games even though they have what seems to be a more than useful side. They fell behind thanks to a corner nobody appeared keen to clean up and by the time Orlic arrived late in the box it was too late. A second corner and this time a header gave South Melbourne a 2-0 win.
