Roar v Sydney

A-League report by Ted Mulder
Queensland Roar v Sydney FC

Bumper crowd of 23,142 spectators saw the Roar go down (undeservedly in my book) to Sydney 1-3. That included pro and anti-Roar listees in S311 with David Marshall (after working up a pre-match anticipation at O'Leary's with some of us) roaring his delight at the Sydney goals sitting almost within shoulder clapping distance of George Negus and me roaring in anguish at the many wasted opportunities to score by the Roar (including an almost guaranteed sitter with both Baird and Brownlie only to beat Bolton in goal just before half time and quite a few in the second half, although Remo Buess for the Roar just managed to stop the ball on the line after goalkeeper Willis was soundly beaten two thirds into the game) and Geedub being more pragmatic as to whether Sydney deserved the win or not.

Rodney came over at half time for a chat from a few sections away while Cam's wavering decision to be a Roar supporter or not must have been difficult sitting in the section with the official Qld Roar Supporters gang roaring into his ears at the opposite end of Suncorp.

The Sydney goals were well struck and couldn't be faulted, even without Yorke's involvement. And I have to say that he did not impress me one jot, especially being the one million dollar plus star attraction he is supposed to be. On very few occasions did he manage to elude the very attentive Roar defense and midfield to pass the odd ball but as the noted striker he was totally absent. I couldn't help noticing a similarity in expectations and outcomes between Yorke tonight and Archie Thompson in last Sunday's game against Melbourne.

A few very dodgy referee decisions marred the game again for the third home game for the Roar in a row.

It was generally agreed that the standard was about on par with Yorke's summation of the A-League in his interview with the SMH as being between 1st and 2nd division in the UK and that seemed to be a bit of a disappointment for some. However, that is about the best we can expect here and some of us felt we should accept that and get on with enjoying the game such as it is.

Oh, and I didn't win the car ... again
