Nick Carle has salvaged a point for Sydney FC as Pascal Bosschaart's cross was touched home by the attacking midfielder. However it was Maycon for Melbourne Heart who opened his account in the A-League and for the game in the 85th minute.
Melbourne Heart went into the clash at AAMI Park with an unchanged line-up whereas Sydney make two changes with ‘keeper Liam Reddy replacing Ivan Necevski and Mark Bridge returning from suspension to replace Bruno Cazarine in the Sydney attack.
Just as the game kicked off the heavens opened over AAMI Park just like 14 of their 17 games last season. Melbourne Heart had the first chance on 14 minutes with Alex Terra chipping a through ball over the top which then fell for Matt Thompson who put his header over Liam Reddy before he tipped over for a corner. From the resulting corner Liam Reddy dropped the slippery ball but Terry Antonis was on the line to clear.
On 21 minutes Terra once again had an attempt after Pascal Bosschaart was pressured into giving the ball away but his chip went over the Sydney goal.
Sydney's first chance came on 24 minutes with Socceroo Brett Emerton with a deflected shot. But the shot went straight into the hands of Clint Bolton. At this stage of the game Sydney FC were dominating in the midfield with Terry Antonis, Nick Carle and Karol Kisel whereas Heart were struggling to retain possession nor win it back. But the tie stayed nil all at half-time.
Sydney had the first chance of the second-half through Karol Kisel but his shot just went wide after a brilliant move with Nick Carle.
Melbourne Heart's real first chance of the second-half came on 70 minutes through Mate Dugandzic who put his free kick into the side netting as the majority of the crowd thought it was in.
Sydney continued to attack with substitute Cazarine with a shot spilled by Clint Bolton and Antonis' curling shot just missing the top corner.
On 77 minutes John van't Schip put on Brazilian Striker Maycon who opened the scoring on 85 minutes as Mate Dugandzic's shot was deflected it fell for Maycon who turned and showed his strength to push off the defenders to put it into the net.
The game was not over though. On the third added minute of stoppage time Karol Kisel put his shot over the bar but Chris Beath saw a deflection. With the resulting corner by Emerton Grant had a header saved and as Behich cleared it Pascal Bosschaart crossed it low for Carle to touch home.
