Jets v Glory

A-League report by Robert Szomolnoki
Newcastle United Jets v Perth Glory

The Newcastle Jets wasted a great opportunity to move up the league ladder when they were held by the visiting Perth Glory who had Shane Smeltz ruled out by injury and had Billy Mehmet sent off as early as the 32nd minute.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring as early as the 8th minute, a Dodd cross has Mehmet getting in before Tiago to fire past Kennedy.

A minute later Griffiths is away and goal bound, he is clipped just outside the area but amazingly referee Delovski waves play on.

On 15 mins a beautiful one two between Sterjovski and Van Den Brink has Sterjovski crossing perfectly for Mehmet but he heads wide from in front of goal.

The Jets respond with a Elrich corner that results in a goal mouth scramble ending in a Regan shot from just 3 meters away he hits the upright and the ball bounces out.

On 32 minutes Mehmet lunges in with a two footed tackle that sees him make contact with the ball and misses Tiago completely, amazingly Delovski gives a straight red card that sees Ferguson and Mehmet go wild with protests.

The final 10 minutes of the first half has the Jets with all the possession using their numerical advantage but they can only create one chance Brockie is wawy ion goal but Van Den Drink cleverly blocks the shot.

The second half has the Jets have all the possession with the Glory relying on quick counter attacks mainly through Dodd and on 52 mins Sterjovski finds Dodd who is away on goal but young Regan is able to stay with him and he blocks the shot on goal.

On 62 mins a Perth clearance is hit out straight to Wehrman who goes on a long run through the defence, he makes it to the by-line then cuts back a perfect cross for Jeffers who heads home from in front of goal, its 1-1.

A turning point occurs on 69 minutes Haliti is to come on for the tiring Bridges who is making his first start for the season, but instead it is Jeffers who comes off, he had come on only 14 minutes earlier but has twisted an ankle so Bridges to forced to play 90 minutes.

After equalising the home team push forward in numbers, Byun fires a 25 meter effort that Vukovic is forced to make a diving save, then a long ball finds Haliti who cleverly heads back to Bridges who fires just wide from distance.

With time running out Elrich crosses for Bridges but Vukovic does enough to stop the threat. Glory rely on breaks through Dodd and Miller is having a great game.

The final action has a Byun corner finding Topor-Stanley his header beats Vukovic but is cleared off the line, but Deloski whistles for a foul.

It ends 1-1, the Jets were poor in creating chances against the 10 men of Perth who had a number of solid performers.
