P Pezzini put the boys from the border ahead after only seven minutes only for Chris Christou to equalise for the Greens in 14. It was a tough even battle thereafter until Leo Refojos grabbed the winner for the home team in 87 minutes. It was a similar scoreline at Olympic Village, where Heidelberg United lost at home to Melbourne Knights. Nick Papoutsis was the Bergers' scorer after 15 minutes and Matthew Govic continued his goal a game run for the Knights three minutes after the interval, with the other goal coming from Damon Collina in 80 minutes. Billy Mitroulas scored an early goal after 9 minutes to put Gippsland Falcons ahead against the VIS, but Pat Arcuri secured an equaliser for the Institute, which has found it very difficult to win a game in the Valley over the years. South Melbourne trounced the South Melbourne Rockets by nine goals to nil. The writing was on the wall when Erhan Bayraktar of the Rockets was sent off after only three minutes for tripping. Franc Catalano took advantage of two penalty kicks in the first half to put the senior youth team ahead and Tas Psonis headed neatly over the keeper in the last minute of the first period. Kon Karasividis made it four, then Catalano completed his hat-trick in 70 minues, with Karasividis providing the service on both occasions. Substitute Nick Marinos grabbed two quick goals, and he might have had more, before Louis Rozanitis came up from the back to add a final nail in the coffin. The Rockets had two more players dismissed for second offences in the latter stages of the game. National Youth League (Northern Division), 27-8 December 1997 Newcastle Breakers overcame Marconi Fairfield at Marconi Stadium by five goals to one. Greg Owens scored twice for the Breakers and the other contributors were Michael Sloane, Chris Tancevski and Tony Bauer. D MacDonald scored for Marconi. Marconi Fairfield Colts scored an upset two-one win away to Wollongong City. It was goal-less in the first half then three late goals produced a thrilling finish with the visitor getting the winning goal in the last minute. Mark Haggar opened the scoring in 73 minutes, but Colin Luff equalised in 81, only for Haggar to pop up again with the vital winner.
