Leigh Wilkinson who joined the Greens from Cranbourne had an excellent match in addition to his goal. League leader Melbourne Knights had to come from behind to beat South Melbourne by two goals to one. The top team was stung when James Kasikakis fired in a shot after 27 minutes which took a wicked deflection off Andrija Batur leaving keeper Andrew Belaich stranded. Worse followed when Ivica Kolceg was sent off for his second offence late in the first half. Six minutes into the second half Michael Bosevski drove to the bye line and hammered over a cross which Louie Rozanitis deflected past his keeper Chris Jones, while under pressure from John Kalabric. Adis Kablar then put the South Melbourne defence under pressure and the referee construed that a ball played back in the direction of the keeper was a deliberate pass-back. When the keeper picked up the ball an indirect free kick was awarded which was touched to Michael Bosevski who drove it into the net in 64 minutes. Belaich was then penalised in turn for handling outside his area, but Nick Orlich, beginning his comeback with the youth team, fired the resultant free kick into the Knights' wall and the match ended with the Knights still ahead. South Melbourne Rockets went down by four goals to two at home to Altona Magic. It was two-all at the break with goals by Nondas Manolitis and Aytec Yilmaz in 18 and 20 minutes for the Rockets. But the Rockets had already given away an early own goal and Bill Trpcevski brought the Magic level in 36 minutes. Trpcevski added his second on the hour and Pece Cergovski rounded off the Magic's win. Albury Wodonga and Bulleen Inter could not be separated in a scoreless draw in Albury. Jim Wibskov was outstanding in goal for the northerners and Ben Menzies starred in the midfield. National Youth League (Northern Division), 16-18 January 1998 Newcastle Breakers and the New South Wales Institute of Sport drew one-all at Topper Stadium on Friday. There was some dispute about the Newcastle goal, some suggesting it was an own goal, but the referee credited it to Luke Knott. Shane Cansdell-Sheriff equalised for the the Institute. A Denis Jurjevic goal for Wollongong gave the Wolves a one-nil win at Suncorp Stadium over the Queensland Academy of Sport. It was as tight as the score suggests, though both sides felt they had created enough chances to ensure victory. Michael Katz and Mathew Valeri scored for the ACT Academy at Seiffert Oval against Marconi. It was well into injury time before Chad Gibson got a consolation goal for the visitor. UTS Olympic Colts and Sydney United Colts drew two-all at Belmore. Ali Jomaa and Scott Baillie scored for Olympic and Mark Rudan had a double for United. Finally Sydney United overcame Marconi Fairfield Colts by five goals to one. Azur Mujanovic scored two for United, and singles fell to Mario Jerman, Joel Griffiths and Daniel Kukucka. Mark Haggar grabbed his fourteenth of the season for the Colts team.
