John Macevoy scored after twelve minutes, and though the Greens peppered the goals at times, the Falcons held on increasingly comfortably for the win. The surprise of the round was Altona Magic's two-one win over the Victorian Institute of Sport. Once again the Magic fielded a very young side but they fought all the way and deserved the result, even though the VIS had numerous chances of its own. Zoran Petrevski, who plays for the Magic in the Victorian Premier League, scored for the VIS, but Bosevski and Pece Cergovski replied for the Magic. Heidelberg United scored twice in a minute through Warsame Yusus and Peter Pasgas just after the break to cancel out an early goal for Bulleen by Matthew Collina. Heidelberg rode its luck to hang on for a narrow win. Melbourne Knights were too strong for South Melbourne Rockets winning eventually by ten goals to one. Ivan Razov did the damage with a first half hat-trick and Adis Kablar and Festim Zekiri added doubles. The other goals came in singles from Dragi Nasteveki, John Kalabric and Damian Vojtek. George Lioupas gained a consolation goal for the Rockets in the last minute. Carlton got an early goal through Marco Maisano after five minutes away to Albury-Wodonga and held on to win by that goal. Adam Pongho was probably the best of the Carlton side on the day, but the team was below par. Albury-Wodonga played a strong, physical game but just could not break down the Carlton defence. Jason Whitten and Nathan Ardern were the top performers. National Youth League (Northern Division), 17-19 October 1997 After a goal-less first half, Newcastle Breakers ran away from UTS Olympic Colts winning by four goals to two. Chris Tancevski scored for the Breakers after 59 minutes, but Philip Marzec equalised six minutes later and Ali Jomaa put the Colts ahead with twelve minutes to go. In a fiery last ten minutes the Breakers added three goals through Tancevski again, Greg Owens and Tony Bauer, while two players were sent off. Sydney United took a one nil lead over the AIS when Azur Mujanovic scored after twelve minutes, but the second half saw the Institute lads score twice in six minutes through Sterjovski and Marc Bresciano. Ivan Bazina equalised for Sydney United to leave the final result as a two-all draw. Wollongong City downed Sydney United Colts by seven goals to nil. Christian Zelvis and Raymond Younis each scored twice, and Paul Dimech, George Souris and George Mahanidis once. UTS Olympic had a three-one win against the NSW Institute of Sport. Leo Carle put Olympic ahead in 15 minutes, followed by Sam Larocca after 28. Jim Bakis added a third in 78 minutes, but Daniel Watkins pulled a goal back for the Institute in 83 minutes. Oscar Zamora scored the only goal for the ACT Academy of Sport in its one-nil win over Marconi Fairfield Colts.
