National Youth League (Southern Division), 7-10 November 1997

Carlton continued its winning ways with a two-one win over Melbourne
Knights at Optus Oval. Club captain Alan Hunter made his long-awaited
return to competitive soccer in this match and scored after twelve minutes.
Adam Pongho made it two in 33 minutes and it took the Knights till 83
minutes to get on the scoresheet through Mijo Trupkovic. Andy Vargas was
sent off for his second cautionable offence for Carlton.

Albury-Wodonga seemed to be about to break its duck when it took a two-nil
lead over Gippsland Falcons in the Latrobe Valley within 20 minutes of
kick-off. T Pezzini and Z Tudor gave Albury its lead. But in a spirited
come-back the Falcons got a goal through Al Cheney in 56 and then two later
efforts by J McEvoy and Hugo Giminez saw the Falcons through, but only
just.

The Victorian Institute of Sport recorded its first win of the season
against South Melbourne Rockets by four goals to one. Bill Petrovski
scored inside a minute as the VIS pressurised the Rockets straight from the
kick-off. Zoran Petrevski added a second with a header from a Petrovski
free kick. Leigh Squillaciotti pulled a goal back for the Rockets in 51
minutes, but Petrevski converted a cross from Damian Cassar on the hour and
in the final minute Serhat Hulusi made a fine run and his pass was
controlled with one touch of his right foot by Adrian Cuzuppe, who finished
with his left. Ben Cassar was sent off in injury time.

Heidelberg United caused an upset with a two-nil win over South Melbourne
on Friday night. Mile Medjedovic scored after 15 minutes and Dragi
Jugovic just before the interval. South Melbourne hit the cross-bar with
a shot, but the Bergers were delighted with the victory and might have had
a couple more goals.

After a tight goal-less first half Bentleigh Greens scored twice in the
second to defeat Altona Magic at Paisley Park. S Kourkoutzelos and Chris
Christou were the goalscorers.

National Youth League (Northern Division), 7-9 November 1997

There were some very tight matches in the Northern Division, starting with
a two-alld raw between Sydney United and Newcastle Breakers at Parramatta
Stadium. Peter Juchniewicz put the visitors ahead in 33 minutes, and Joel
Griffins equalised for United in 42. Jason Culina's goal in 56 minutes
put United in front and the turning point came when the home team were
awarded a penalty. Had it gone in it might have settled the match, but
the miss gave the Breakers a chance, and Tony Bauer equalised in 70
minutes.

The AIS and the QAS drew three-all in a very physical, but high quality
match at the AIS Soccer Stadium. Mile Sterjovski was the individual hero
with a hat-trick, starting in 22 minutes. Daniel Invincible equalised six
minutes later, only for Sterjovski to score his second a further ten
minutes aftewards. When Sterjovski completed his hat-trick in 75 minutes
it seemed the points were secure for the AIS, but in a remarkable
turnaround Andrew Packer scored twice in 79 and 85 minutes for the
Queenslanders, who had two players sent off in a tousy finish. Both
coaches, Steve O'Connor and Gary Phillips wanted to concentrate on the
numerous passages of highly skilled play earlier in the game. Apart from
the goalscorers, midfielder Gianni Culpo stood out for the QAS.

New South Wales Institute of Sport had a comprehensive five-nil win over
the ACT Academy of Sport. Goals came a steady stream from Daniel Watkins
2, Joseph Corrente, Paul Wearne and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.

Hat-tricks by S Pellecrino and Joe Bruni took Marconi Fairfield to a
comprehensive six-one win away to Wollongong City. George Mananeis scored
the only goal for the home team.

Marconi Fairfield Colts and Sydney United Colts drew one-all, with Hakan
Celic scoring for Marconi and Mario Jerman equalising for the United Colts.

In a Round 13 match brought forward to Sunday, UTS Olympic Colts beat the
AIS by two goals to one. Husseyn Bayhen scored for Olympic Colts in 29
and 52 minutes and these were sandwiched on either side of a goal for the
AIS by Mile Sterjovski, his eleventh of the season already, in 43 minutes.
