Jovanco Novacevski opened for Carlton after 12 minutes, and that was the only goal of the first half. Branko Bacak grabbed a double in 65 and 71 minutes to complete the Carlton win. Melbourne Knights fought back to win a thriller against the VIS by four goals to three at Kim Reserve. John Kalabric scored after five minutes for the Knights, but Adrian Cuzuppe in 7 and Boris Ovcin in 12 gave the VIS a break it held till the last twenty minutes of play. Then Festim Zekiri popped up with the first of his two goals, sandwiched on either side of one by Ante Deak. Damian Cassar pulled a goal back in 89 minutes but it was too late for the VIS to get on terms. The VIS played well in the first half, but faded out in the second enabling the Knights to take control. Heideleberg United had an excellent four-one win away to Altona Magic. Steve Bogdanovski scored first for Altona after 13 minutes, and Nick Papoutsis equalised seven minutes later. Tony Ouliaris's penalty put the Bergers in front after 54 and two late goals by Manny Papoutsis and Daniel Malina saw the visitor home. South Melbourne beat Albury Wodonga by four goals to two at Bob Jane Stadium. Franc Catalano scored for the Lakers after 20 minutes, and an unfortunate own goal by Albury provided the other score in the first half. V O'Grady pulled a goal back in 58 minutes, but two late strikes by J Tambouras and George Goutzioulis had the Lakers home even though C Davies scored for Albury in injury time. National Youth League (Northern Division), 21-3 November 1997 Queensland Academy of Sport beat Sydney United Colts by two goals to nil at Suncorp Stadium. Kasey Wehrmann took the first steps in his comeback with a goal after 51 minutes and the word is that he came through the match very well, though obviously a bit stiff. He was one of the top players on view, as was Queensland's other scorer Shane Smeltz who got his goal in injury time in the first half. The AIS was too strong for Newcastle Breakers winning by six goals to nil in Canberra and catapulting the team to the top of the league on Saturday. Goal machine Mile Sterjovski added two more to his tally which is now up to 14 after only eight rounds. His first was the only goal of the first half, but when Michael Ferrante made it two on the hour, the floodgates opened with further goals by Ante Duer, Sterjovski's second, Marc Bresciano and Michael Anderson, the last of these coming just on time. UTS Olympic had a two-nil away win over Marconi Fairfield Colts. The goalscorers for Olympic were Tayfun Davrimol and Leo Carle from the penalty spot. Wollongong City and the NSW Institute of Sport played a one-all draw at Brandon Park. Christian Zelvis scored for the Wolves and Daniel Watkins for the Institute. Finally Sydney United made it a bad day for Marconi youth with a three-nil victory over the senior youth team. David Kukucka opened the scoring after 12 minutes, and Tony Krslovic added a second in 25. In the second half the only goal came from Robert Angievski after 65 minutes.
