Australia 2 - Nigeria 3

Dave, there was the usual sadness from the faithful - goodness knows I feel I'm almost getting immune to it - but I think crashing in World Cups is much much worse...

My son and I were in great seats (behind the Aussie bench, 30 rows back) - there were a lot a boofheads near us that knew nothing about football. For the latter part of the Matildas game I went round to the (standing but permanent) structure behind Bay 23. Its great that this section will be there for all future games and as a result no ticket buying planning is needed to meet up with the "usuals". Nonetheless returned to our seats for the men's game - and had to tell off one of the nearby "fans" for constant carping about our forward play.

In general though, I though we played very well - we lacked the individual brilliance of one or two of them, but our team play was better. We also have a lot of skillfull players at this level - I thought the pace and skill of our guys was a level higher than what I'd seen before (admittedly on TV) of prior Olyroo teams. Stupid defensive errors notwithstanding.

The positives? "The future??" - there's always the bloody future isnt there - its just that some of us wonder, when we estimate our lifespan, when we might see a tournament where we get an ounce of luck and our efforts get better rewarded.

In the end, I felt at least the boofheads saw a game of terrific intensity and skill, and recognised that, despite media blackouts and bias, we produce great football sides. That, and the whole Olympic thing, was why some people were happy I guess. We didn't lose any friends to the cause tonight.

For me - I view the Olympics and the Olyroos as two separate things. The Olympics I enjoy with no risk - it doesn't matter, really, what happens. You know how I feel about our football teams.

Now I can get on and watch the Olympics.
