I can't win. If I say nice things about Uruguay, I'm being sarcastic. If I say shit about Uruguay, I'm being a sore winner.
Basically Uruguayan domination, psychopaths Montero and Mendez GBHing Kewell and Viduka into submission. The celebrated Uguy attack of Recoba, Olivera and Zayaleta doing battle with Tobin, Ivanovic and Bosnich.
We break away just after the start of extra time. Kewell cuts in from the right and blasts it, Flores spilling it into the net.
It was fate - we were the first? team to progress on the golden goal in a FIFA tourny, against Uruguay in the 1993 U-20's. Muscat was captain for our team then, he returns today in place of the hapless Slater. My perception of the English league is confirmed when a player like Slater can win his club's player of the year award.
Mendez scythed down Kewell early, then went in late on Lazaridis as he broke up the wing. Lucky to stay on the pitch.
The unholy trinity were finding things difficult getting past our backline. Tobin is in the form of his life. Ivanovic continues to defy age. Tony Vidmar came in to complete the all-conquering Adelaide City backline of the early 90's.
And then there's Bosnich. A player of remarkable talent. His shotstopping has taken on a new level in this tournament. His attitude and desire for Oz football can be challenged. His skill cannot.
Kewell, at 19, is the best prospect we've ever produced. He takes over that task from front running partner Viduka. Viduka was top scorer at 18 and 19 in our local league. A giant, he doesn't have the aerial skills required for his build. He needs to move away from Croatia. Preferably to the Bundesliga.
It must be painful being a Uruguayan supporter. Such talent up front, but still the team kicks. If only they could concentrate on developing their younger players. I personally cannot think of a team with the quality of young talent up front as Uruguay.
