New South Wales Gardiner Cup Champions |
---|
Name Changes
1885-1887 - Rainsford Trophy
1888-1929 - Gardiner Cup
Note
The first knock-out cup competition was the Rainsford Cup that was instituted in 1885. Names after a well known sports loving publican from Sydney, the actual trophy is rumoured to have been produced but never made it to Australia for presentation.
In 1888 the Rainsford Trophy was then superceded by the Gardiner Cup named after the manager of a Sussex Street based softgoods warehouse. The Gardiner Cup remained a "knock-out" FA Cup style competition until the State League split in 1928. The 1929 series (to be added shortly) never made it to its finale and thus a new competition was instituted in 1930.
