The LG Young Socceroos have completed a clean sweep in the two match series against Glasgow Rangers Youth, with victory in the second and final game at North Sydney Oval tonight.
As in the first game last week in Canberra, both teams matched eachother in the first half, which ended in a nil-nil deadlock at the end of forty five minutes.
Midfielder Michael Ferrante went closest to breaking that deadlock in the opening period from two free kicks, the first curling past the wall and forcing Rangers keeper Mark Brown into a desperate save, the second again curling past the wall, and skimming the top right hand corner of the goal.
The Australians continued their assault and began to pepper their opponents goal in the second half, finally rewarded in the 66th minute via two substitutes, midfielder Luke Wilkshire breaking down the left and cutting the ball back to striker Scott McDonald, who slotted the ball home from close range for a 1-0 victory to the LG Young Socceroos.
"It's been a good camp for the boys, and has given me a pretty clear indication for the base of the squad for next month's qualifiers," said coach Ange Postecoglou after the match.
"While I wasn't fixed on the results, it was good to get the two victories under our belt, although there were quite a few good chances out there tonight that the boys didn't capitalize on.
"Overall though, this was my first journey with the Under-20s, and they're a great bunch of young lads, and while no one should get too carried away at the moment, they are all playing at a good level of competition, which is a clear indication to me that I have a pretty good squad of players.
"I'll still be looking at another two or three players who are based overseas, because I'd like to give them the opportunity to play for their country, but all in all, I'm very pleased with the progress this squad of 22 has shown." he concluded.
