NSW Sapphires appeared to have the edge on Canberra
in Sunday's replay of last season's grandfinal, looking the sharper in
attack, led up front by the busy, skilful Sarah Walsh. In an entertaining, open
game, Canberra Eclipse however were never too far behind and fought hard to the
end.
The Sapphires claimed the lead in the 28th minute, Michelle Carney neatly put through behind the defence and, one-on-one with the keeper, drove the ball into the top of the net from 12 metres. NSW scored again in the 41st minute, the unmarked Walsh finishing in clinical fashion with a great low drive which flew low into the left corner of goal. Eclipse produced a very timely lifeline shortly before the half-time whistle, a piercing ball through from the middle of the park cracked first time by Caitlin Munoz into the back of the net from 15 metres on the left. Canberra then surprised NSW with the equaliser three minutes after resumption, Tal Karp with a top strike from 25 metres on the left. Just three minutes later, Walsh was again through on goal but ajudged to have been fouled in the box and Sapphires were awarded a penalty, but Taryn Rockall's spot kick skimmed the top of the crossbar and went out. Midway through the half, Canberra enjoyed a good period but were unable to capitalise on four chances. NSW then squandered another gilt-edged chance in the 77th minute, Catherine Cannuli bursting through the defence and, with the goalkeeper beaten, her low shot dribbled across the face of goal and hit the bottom of the post. Cannuli collected the loose ball but her second shot was blocked on the line, allowing Cannuli to this time cut it back but the danger was eventually cleared from the scramble of bodies.

The young Adelaide Sensation came away with the
coveted three points on Saturday in what was a fairly even contest thanks to a brilliant
display by goalkeeper Leanne Trimboli combined with a pair of goals by league
top scorer Lisa De Vanna, whilst Cheryl Salisbury controlled the play in
midfield. Queensland Sting performed below par, sloppy passing too often their
downfall, although Heather Garriock kept the pressure on the home side with her
dangerous crosses.
Sensation defender Chichi May gave an early hint of what was to come when her 7th minute freekick rocked the crossbar. Adelaide then claimed the lead in the 29th minute, the pacy De Vanna intercepting a backpass to the keeper and finishing with a sidefooted shot. Former Adelaide striker Natalie Thomas then had Queensland's best chance of the first half, breaking the offside trap only to see her strike parried away. In the 74th minute, a lobbed attempt by Adelaide's Vicki Balomenos hit the crossbar, and four minutes later at the other end, a Sting opportunity was cleared off the goalline by defender Tanya Katianos. With ten minutes remaining, Sensation scored number two. A Salisbury cross was mishandled by the keeper allowing De Vanna to steal the ball and toepoke it into the open goal. In the 89th minute, Sting's Belinda Dawney was released one-on-one with the keeper, but Trimboli rescued her team with a fantastic save. The following minute, a push in the box saw a penalty awarded to Queensland, but Trimboli wasn't giving up her clean sheet and pushed Garriock's spot kick around the post. Trimboli was sharp to the end, again denying Garriock four minutes into stoppage time.

Northern NSW Pride restored some pride in their
campaign with a solid 3-0 win over Victoria Vision on Saturday, their first points for the
season lifting them off the bottom of the ladder, swapping places with their
opponent.
Pride dominated the first half, their midfield and frontline combinations putting the home side under constant pressure. Victoria, unorganised and lacking shape for the opening 45 minutes, put on an improved display in the second interval but not sufficiently to take control of proceedings over Northern NSW. Pride were rewarded in the 18th minute when a well-weighted cross from Amber Neilson was headed home by Katie Gill. Seven minutes later, the lead was doubled, Ashley Wilson's thumping 28 metre drive fantastically parried by goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri, with the loose ball sent into the back of the net by Neilson. The sapping heat began to take its toll in the more evenly fought second half with play becoming scrappy in patches. Northern however added a third goal in the 76th minute in classic style. Tara McMinn dribbled her way up the flank before supplying a pinpoint cross which was smashed in via the head of Lauren Colthorpe.
