In Brisbane, the top pair Queensland Sting and Northern NSW Pride met for the second time in a week after the points were shared last Sunday. Today's valuable 3-0 win sees Sting the first team to beat Northern this season, and also the only team to come away with two wins from the weekend's heavy schedule.

The scoreline, however, was not a true reflection of the contest, Northern also creating the chances, but unusually unable to put any away. In a physical and fairly closely fought encounter, Queensland scored two important early goals and maintained the edge with a strong performance in midfield.

It was Northern who were unlucky not to score within the very first minute of play, Lindsey Jones hitting the crossbar, the ball bouncing down but out. Queensland then claimed the lead in the 9th minute, April Mann unleashing a cracking half-volley past the keeper. Seven minutes later, Sting further upset the leaders with another top goal, Lana Harch receiving the ball outside the 18-yard box before weaving her way past several defenders and a clinical finish.

Midway through the term, Pride had chances in the air, but were unable to make any count, before Queensland's Krystina Walker skimmed the post just before half-time.

Northern came out with more intensity at the restart to put pressure on the Sting defence but still couldn't capitalise. The game then shifted from one end to the other, both teams using their pace and some fancy footwork to create numerous opportunities on goal. Claire Polkinghorne added Queensland's third goal in the 73rd minute, driving back at goal a ball which had come out from the Northern defence.

In Melbourne, Canberra Eclipse were relieved to break their run of five consecutive losses with today's 1-0 win over Victoria Vision.

A scrappy and physical first half produced little to cheer about, both teams pushing forward but without any real support for the ball carrier. In the very first minute, Canberra's Gill Foster came close with a cross come shot flashing across the face of goal. The home side's best opportunity came midway through the period, Leigh Terek chesting a corner kick at the near post before shooting back over her head, the shot hitting the post.

After the break, Vision's Angelucci had an early shot saved, but it was Eclipse who claimed the lead in the 50th minute. A missed clearance by the home defence saw the ball fed forward by Canberra to Amy Chapman in the penalty area. The striker clipped it around the keeper but the bobbling ball was cleared from near the goal-line. The follow-up shot then hit the post and bounced diagonally across the face of goal for Caitlin Munoz to tap home.

Canberra continued to control the play before Victoria started to come back into the game after making several substitutions, particularly with the introduction of Belinda Pannella. The forward had a shot go wide, and with two minutes remaining, teammate Caroline McEvoy was away but rushed her shot.

Meanwhile at the other end, an Amy Chapman effort was saved, before another golden opportunity seven minutes from time for Canberra. A quick break saw the visitors two on one after two defenders had put themselves out of the picture after diving in. Amy Chapman took a little more time for the shot than needed and the chance went begging.

In Adelaide, NSW Sapphires bounced back from their disappointing loss in Melbourne on Friday to outplay Adelaide Sensation with four second half goals for a 4-0 win.

In a lacklustre first stanza, the contest was a fairly even battle. Christina Papageorgiou set up Vicki Balomenos for the home side's couple of chances, the striker hitting the sidenetting early, and at the end of the half, firing over in a one-on-one. NSW had a Taryn Rockall freekick saved, and Michelle Carney was unable to capitalise on a defensive error.

The Sapphires then came out firing in the second half, dominating with an all-out attacking run. They opened their account in the 57th minute, Rockall released with a through-ball to cut back from the by-line for Carney who sidefooted from the 6-yard mark with the keeper stranded.

Adelaide's Katrina Bexis had a chance to level, but the attempt was well saved by Cassandra Kell, and five minutes later, NSW doubled their lead when defender Lisa Gilbert converted a corner kick with a side volley. Substitute Aysha Adalis then showed off her skills with the dead ball in the 77th minute, her beautiful low freekick from 30 metres rounding the four-man wall and sneaking under the goalkeeper for goal number three.

Adelaide still fought on, but two chances were hit straight at the keeper, before Adalis again showed the earlier freekick was no fluke by repeating the effort from a similar distance. This time, the low strike hit the inside of the right post and into goal. In stoppage time, Adalis came close to her third, her corner kick hitting the crossbar and out.
