The Australian Soccer Federation organised what they called a "World Series for May and June of 1984. Inviting some famous club sides from Europe to take part they were pitted against two Australian squads coached by Frank Arok (A) and Eddie Thomson (B). The tournament was a great success boosting the profile of the national side at home and providing Frank Arok some quality opposition to play. The overseas sides to take part were Manchester United (England), Rangers (Scotland), Nottingham Forest (England), Juventus (Italy) and Iraklis (Greece). The first world series game was in Sydney and was Manchester United's only match against Australia for the series. For the tour Manchester United had three guest players; Tommy Hutchinson, Frank Worthington and Peter Barnes. The rest of the World Series games were split between Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane and Adelaide giving the Australian soccer public the oppurtunity to see their national side in action against quality opposition.
