Following the success of the 1984 World Series tournament the Australian Soccer Federation decided to conduct another World Series club tournament in 1985 and invited First Division club sides Vasco De Gama (Brazil), Tottenham (England) and Udinese (Italy). The series was conducted in a round robin format with all teams meeting each other and the two leaders playing off in the final. Australias first match of the tournament was against Tottenham in Melbourne.

Dez Marton the former St George Budapest striker was honored by the soccer fraternity with a testimonial match at St George Stadium. The Dez Marton squad of past and present players took on the Socceroos in an exhibtion match played over three 30 minute segments to give all of the Marton squad the oppurtunity to take to the field. The Socceroos who were in camp for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers used this game as a training run. This match was an exhibition game and does not count as any kind of Socceroo appearance.

The Chinese national side toured Australia in late September 1985 to play for the Ampol Cup in Brisbane on September 27 (see A archive). Socceroo coach Frank Arok split his squad and formed an Australian B side under coach John Margaritis. The 'B' team played two games against the Chinese national team to allow the entire Socceroo squad some valuable match practise ahead of World Cup qualifiers in October.
