Canberra successfully end their unconquered season against a tenacious but ultimately inferior Brisbane side and in the process end the duopoly between Brisbane and Sydney since the relaunch of the womens league. If you look you'll see that's more or less what happened in the previous incarnation of the league also.

Sydney looked to have their place in the final booked when a series of controversial decisions conspired to have Brisbane go through. In injury time (I know it says 89.. don't start) Brisbane were understandably keen to proceed with the game so when Sydney played the ball out to allow one of their players to get attention it was the convenient opinion of the hosts that it was merely time wasting and did not throw the ball to Sydney on the restart. That play resulted in the equaliser and when Kyah Simon was sent off for a second yellow card coach Alen Stajcic understandably lost the plot and was dismissed from the sideline. Despite some good chances to Sydney to win it in extra time it went to penalties and having 4 of the players who might take those penalties off the field Sydney couldn't quite get it done. Go Canberra!

Historically Melbourne have sucked the big one in the WNSL/W-League getting this far is a significant change in that and paradoxically it comes in the season after they ditched long-time Matildas keeper.
