The WNSL originally ran from the 1996/1997 Season until the 2003/2004 Season. The 2005 season was an "Australian Women's Football Tournament" held in Canberra from September 30 to October 9. There were 8 teams (the usual suspects, the Western Waves for the whole "season" and the Sapphires to field 2 teams "blue" and "white"). In the 2008/2009 Season the WNSL was resurrected by the Football Federation under the name of the "W-League".
